ABRAHAM DE MOIVRE discovered the normal distribution in 1733 as an approximation to the binomial distribution, It was so named by Sir Francis Galton and Karl Pearson during the late nineteenth century, but it was also called the Laplacian distribution, by Pierre-Simon de Laplace, and the Gaussian distribution, by Carl Friedrich Gauss
