ULTRA-MIDDLE CLASS (POEM)
ULTRA-MIDDLE CLASS
By Thomas Hoskyns Leonard
I am adopted Scottish working class,
And forget the dubious past!
That's what I forlornly say
To keep me on the straight and narrow way.
But if I with the crass Londinium crew had stayed
Would my thoughts of youth have been underplayed?
Thus says the fearsome Hyde that from my Jekyll might have risen
To be treated with overwhelming eternal derision:
'Kick them in their arses
While we live out life's farces;
Truth is whatever we can get away with,
Mistruth is what we try to slay with;
Let us play with our Will-ies
And defraud the weak as sillies;
Let us pretend from behind our Utopian masks
To do everything Her Majesty asks;
Let us play Prince Machiavelli's game
While evicting the sick and the lame;
We weren't all born the same!
Let us strive for our OBEs
While we drag Them through the sleaze;
Let us our histories write
While putting our next generations out of sight;
Like the almighty self-aggrandising Cameronians and popes,
Who are really quite inconsiderate dopes,
We're completely fucked up and full of shite'.
Thank goodness I did not take the bite!
And now I struggle to emphathise with the ordinary
Rather than the self-acclaimed extraordinary
With all my ever weakening might,
