FORTH BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION, 1962

View of cables being spun during the construction of the Forth Road Bridge in 1962.

Date 8/1962
Scope and Content Cables being spun during construction of Forth Road Bridge, South/North Queensferry, Edinburgh The Forth Road Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning the River Forth, was commissioned in 1947 and designed 1947-58 by architects Sir Giles Gilbert Scott & Partners, with Mott, Hay & Anderson and Freeman Fox & Partners as consulting engineers. Construction began in 1958 and the bridge was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 4 September 1964. This shows bridge during the spinning of the cables from which the road surface was later suspended. A catwalk for workmen to was constructed between the two towers and the land on either side, and this can be seen directly below the cables. Large amounts of construction materials can be seen on the shore. In the background is the famous Forth Rail Bridge, completed in 1890. The total span of the bridge is nearly 1.8km with a main span of 1km. The elegant steel towers with their cross-beams are each 150m high. Its impressive position close by the famous Forth Rail Bridge makes it a popular tourist attraction and symbol of Scottish engineering innovation. Over 60,000 vehicles use the bridge each day. This structure has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.

EDINBURGH PLASTERWORKS---AN HONEST TRADE AND A FAIR DEAL

                                                              EDINBURGH PLASTERWORKS

Edinburgh Plasterworks have just replaced my (less elaborate) bathroom ceiling and plastered and painted it for under £210. This was after a couple of other local outfits sent me estimates in the region of £1000. It is good to find a local company which is not out to con elderly and vulnerable people

                                                       WILDTRUTH---Healing from Childhood Trauma

My name is Daniel Mackler and I am a filmmakerwriter, and musician based in New York City.  I also worked for ten years as a psychotherapist in New York, though I ended my therapy practice in 2010.  My writings focus on the causes, consequences, and radical mackler photo 1 smallersignificance of childhood trauma.  I see childhood trauma as ranging from the extreme, which is common, to the mild, which is so much MORE common that few even notice it at all, much less call it by its proper name.  I view the norm in our culture as being highly traumatized and I view the average, and even above-average, childhood as being extremely traumatic – and the average parent as lacking both awareness of this and deep empathy for the child.
I see our world growing more pathological, confused, polluted, overpopulated, and disturbed by the day – and I feel that to stand by and say nothing while we destroy our planet is irresponsible and even criminal.  Yet I write with great hope – both for individual healing and for the collective healing of our world.  I seek to offer a new perspective – on relationships, on manifesting the best of ourselves, on the potential value of celibacy, on parenting, on the pathology of the family system, and on the future of our species.

IN DEFENCE OF ATHEISM by Ioana-Noemy Toma

Dear Mr. Hoskyns,

I discovered today your blog,

through David Healy's blog, http://davidhealy.org/study-329-big-risk/ .
Congratulations for your attentive and courageous work on psychiatric abuses. Much is still to be done.

I noticed also that you are member in a Christian community.
As an aware terrestrial citizen, I want to warn you that religions are imperfect traditions,
that can dangerously mislead their followers. It is prudent to analyze rationally their contribution to the
human culture, in order to keep what is valid and to correct what is erroneous.

The atheist communities are not perfect, but they are nevertheless the keepers of important evidence
for the human history, since Democritus and Lucretius
(http://classics.mit.edu/Carus/nature_things.html ) to Galilei, D'Holbach, Paine, Ravel
Hopefully, these rational proofs will be understood by all the humanity, allowing the progress
of comprehension and peace.

Hoping that these links will be useful to you and looking forward to your answer,
I wish to you all the best.

Sincerely,

Ioana-Noemy Toma

Dear Iona-Noemy,

Many thanks for your message.

I base my spiritual beliefs on a reasonable interpretation of the synoptic Gospels. Matthew, Mark, and Luke, since I believe that both St. John and St.Paul have a tendency to either misrepresent or distort Christ's teachings. Indeed, there is some evidence to suggest that Jesus may have been a grass roots anarchist!

If Jesus's teachings about the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25 are to be believed then it is possible for atheists to be christian with a small c by performing good works and deeds and hence to achieve their 'Kingdom of Heaven' e.g,in their own lifetime, However..Christians with a large C who focus on faith rather than good deeds run the risk of being 'sent to Hell' e.g. at the Second Coming.

The important thing is to be decent to each other, and that's all that most reasonable religions are actually trying to say, albeit in highly convoluted ways.

I would agree that many churches effectively advocate evil by not condemning it, See for example my blog post

"Capitalism’s grow-or-die imperative stands radically at odds with ecology’s imperative of interdependence and limit. The two imperatives can no longer coexist with each other; nor can any society founded on the myth that they can be reconciled hope to survive. Either we will establish an ecological society or society will go under for everyone, irrespective of his or her status.... A capitalist economy, by definition, lives by growth; as Bookchin observes: “For capitalism to desist from its mindless expansion would be for it to commit social suicide.” We have essentially, chosen cancer as the model of our social system."-Ursula Le Guin.
