Here we examine the performance of representative samples of Scottish children in 1961 and 1983/4 on items from six scales of the Wechsler IQ test. We estimate that the rate of the gain in IQ for Scottish children over these 22.5 years did not exceed 2.5 IQ points (0.1 7 σ ) per generation. This result may diverge from the reported international trend because the ‘massive’ IQ-type gains found in other countries reflect the reliance of other investigators on multiple-choice, culture-reduced tests that tend to reward intelligent guessing and to penalise scrupulosity.

1982 'Intelligence and inspection time.' Many of these defects have onlv been emphasised because the
interference of the breeder has eliminated natuiral selection. In the
wild state nature was continually at work and when any defects
appeared the animals possessing them were not as a rule given the
opportunity of reproducing themselves. And herein probably lies
the application of these results to the hunian race. For about as great
a number of generations as the Shorthorn cattle have been bred, has
the Anglo-Saxon race been removed from the major effects of natural
selection. Instead, another form of selection has been substituted
which, while it is difficult to define, is nevertheless far removed fron
natural selection. There has been no attempt to eliminate the congeniitally relatively infertile; on the contrary, the present tendency is in the opposite direction.
At the same time, the removal of natural selection should be the
greatest stimulus to inbreeding, for in the majoritv of the domesticated
breeds of livestock it is of the greatest importance that these should be
as homozygous as possible for the maximum desired degree of prolificacy, whereas in certain breeds-not necessarily those mentioned above
^--the opposite is more frequent. In the human, however, where controlled matiiigs are impossible, while it may be laid down as a general
rule that it is unwise to practise inbreeding, nevertheless each separate case must be judged on its own merits, and we must not close our eyes to the fact that some of the greatest men produced are the resuilt of the mating of cousin."
-THE EUGENICS REVIEW. He later rose to be Professor of
Statistics at the University of Edinburgh.

Finney did not of course arrive in Scotland until about a year after Thomson's death in 1955. What is certainly true is that Finney and Thompson were both heavily into Eugenics, I hope that you, Vova. are not trying to fob this off as BS too. A number of people in the Statistical establishment still eeem to be trying tp defend these people.
